#SANDY HOOK PROMISE HOW TO#
Students and educators learn how to identify at-risk behaviors and intervene to get help.

Research has proven that Sandy Hook Promise’s Know the Signs programs effectively teach youth and adults how to prevent school violence, shootings, and other harmful acts. Through our proven, evidence-informed Know the Signs programs and sensible, bipartisan school and gun safety legislation, we teach young people and adults to recognize, intervene, and get help for individuals who may be socially isolated and/or at risk of hurting themselves or others. The mission of Sandy Hook Promise is to end school shootings and create a culture change that prevents violence and other harmful acts that hurt children. It’s your support that makes our lifesaving work possible, and we can never thank you enough. In especially painful moments like these, we’re so grateful to have you by our side. Too many precious lives are at risk if we do. Please, will you help to support our lifesaving work? This is the real, human toll of inaction, and that’s why our work cannot stop. The most meaningful way for us to honor our loved ones, those who were murdered in Uvalde and all the precious lives taken by gun violence across the country is by doing everything we possibly can to prevent future tragedies. We must take meaningful action now, and every day until this epidemic of violence ends. That’s why now, more than ever, we cannot waver in our commitment to protect more children from gun violence. And our hearts ache knowing it didn’t have to be this way – our hearts ache because we know gun violence is preventable. Our hearts ache for those families and that community. Watching the news, we’re reliving our worst nightmare again. The deadliest shooting at an elementary school since our loved ones were murdered at Sandy Hook almost 10 years ago just ripped apart over a dozen more families. This program is designed for all middle and high school students.19 students and 2 adults were killed at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. The program includes a mental health self-assessment that screens every student for depression and suicide. The SOS Signs of Suicide Prevention Program uses an educational curriculum to teach students to recognize the symptoms of depression and suicide, and can be implemented by existing school personnel. Start with Hello is a no-cost, easy to implement, life saving program that teaches students grades 2-12 the skills they need to reach out to and include those who may be dealing with chronic social isolation and create a culture of inclusion and connectedness within their school. Say Something resources are no-cost, digital and downloadable tools that teach students, grades 6-12, how to look for warning signs, signals and threats, especially in social media, from an individual who may be threatening to hurt themselves or others and to Say Something to a trusted adult. Learning to identify warning signs, how to say something to a trusted adult, and how to be more socially inclusive and connected to one another empowers youth to change the climate of their school and to save lives.
